  • How a struggling hip hop musician found seven-figure success online
  • Why finding the right niches for your business is critical
  • The effective, low-cost way to start marketing online

“It’s so easy to make money online,” smiles Jamie Lewis. “You just need to choose your model correctly.”

Lewis, an Internet and affiliate marketer who now earns “a few million dollars a year” promoting to multiple niches, spent the early part of his online career honing his own business model.

A hip hop musician working long hours performing in Harlem and producing music, Lewis got frustrated in 2004 that he was “still in the poor house,” and decided to try selling his music online.

“My original plan,” he explains “was to sell each MP3 for $5.” It soon became clear, however, that his plan wasn’t working. He quickly “adopted the model that Napster used, where you get a whole package.” When he started selling bundles of 500 MP3’s for $30, Lewis soon realized he had found a profitable business model. “It just took off,” he says of his online music business. Providing so much value was a bold move, given that Lewis’s competition was selling each MP3 for $50 each.

At about the same time Lewis began trying his hand at affiliate marketing, promoting other products in various niches. “I started having really good success with that,” he adds.

During those early days, he continues, “I was dabbling in promoting other products and promoting my own music products.” Although his success was growing, like most Internet marketers, his sales in different niches ebbed and flowed from one day to the next. “There were moments where I got discouraged with my music site,” he admits.

That discouragement taught him an important lesson—when business doesn’t go the way you’d like, don’t give up. “Instead,” he adds, “take a deep breath and do some research.” Try to think like the customer, and figure out what would make you buy a product or service if you were the customer.

Staying in your customers’ mindset is one important reason to select niches that you enjoy and can relate to. To be effective in Internet marketing, Lewis explains, you need to understand your customers.

It’s also critical that you send your list free content. “Give your subscribers some love” by offering free bonuses when they make a purchase, Lewis recommends.

And if you’re looking for a low-cost way to get traffic for affiliate marketing offers, article marketing is a great place to start. “Article marketing is basically writing articles and selling other products with those articles” by linking that article back to a sales page or lead page, he explains.

Lewis, whose success now comes from music-related niches “like how to play a guitar or how to play a violin,” is quick to admit that he does work hard. “I have new challenges now that I have taken on new businesses and new responsibilities,” he explains. “I work pretty hard on things like customer service. I have so many customers. I want to make sure all the customers are happy.”

Of course, he concedes, I am “definitely living the dream… it’s amazing, almost like the lottery winner mentality, where it kind of feels like this is too good to be true.” Given that he lives “in Connecticut in a nice a house with a nice sports car and all the stuff like that,” a pretty pleasant reality check is never far away.
