  • How a non-technical Internet marketing newbie turned his own learning into a seven-figure online business
  • How a simple eBook can lay the foundation for major profits
  • The (other) secret to profiting from your list

“I remember somebody asking me, are you using Windows XP? I was like, I don’t know, I am using a computer. Somebody else asked me if I do affiliate marketing, and I had to go to dictionary.com to look up the word affiliate,” recalls Chris Farrell, whose first eBook launched what is now a seven-figure per year online business.

Back then, he explains, “I really knew nothing about Internet marketing other than the fact that I wanted to learn.” A former radio host in the United Kingdom, where he was born and raised, Farrell became intrigued by the idea of making money online after meeting an Internet marketer at a charity event. After that conversation he thought, “It’s not all that complicated when it’s broken down.” Then, “I thought, I can do it better than this guy.”

Farrell quickly began learning new skills—from how to build a website to how to create an eBook to how to make video. For the first six months, Farrell didn’t earn a single cent online. Instead, “I taught myself these [web] skills through trial and error of blood sweat and tears and many 4:00am finishes,” he explains.

That learning process, in fact, would soon become his most profitable asset. It was during those six months that he noticed “a gap in the market.” After weeks of searching, he couldn’t find a single website, product or service that could teach a non-technical person like him the new web skills he needed to run an online business.

If learning these new web skills was challenging for him, he reasoned, it would surely be challenging for other non-technical entrepreneurs as well. Farrell began documenting his learning process, which later became the content for his first eBook, Create Your First Website By 3:45 This Afternoon. It is a “step-by-step, hand-holding” guide for Internet marketing newbies. Farrell used that eBook as a free giveaway—and a way to build his list.

Starting with his second eBook, which explained how to make money online selling photography, Farrell’s long days and late nights began to pay off. “I decided to sell [that eBook] for $27,” he recollects. “I sent an email to my list and made over $250 in one day,” he says. That, he adds, was “the first moment of realizing, okay there is something in this.”

That taste of online success inspired Farrell to create a third eBook about how to make video. Three months later, just nine months into his online career, he began selling it as an eCourse for $67. “That,” he adds, “was the first time ever I started making $1,000 a day.”

The rest, as they say, is history. In 2010, two years after beginning his online career, he launched a product that made $1 million in the first 24 hours.

Farrell, who now focuses on his continuity program, ChrisFarrellMembership.com, reiterates what so many other Internet marketers have shared. “Everybody says it, I know, but it’s true—the money is in the list.”

However, he adds, the list is just the starting point. To be successful online, “you need to nurture a relationship with that list and treat people as you would like to be treated…  Start building lists of people interested in certain subject matters and then start nurturing a relationship with those lists without even thinking about the money,” he advises. Remember also that “not everybody is going to buy from you,” but the people who do can eventually net you significant profits.

Looking back, Farrell comments, “one thing I do have is tenacity. I was not prepared to quit. I really wasn’t.” That determination “made me push through that barrier of fear, doubt, and self-questioning.” Most people get frustrated and think, “I can’t do this, it’s too difficult. That, he adds, is when “most people will quit.” With his own experience as a guide, Farrell recommends staying committed during the good and bad times. Rest assured, that dedication will eventually pay off.

“It did take six months of putting in a lot of work” before he made his first dollar online, Farrell concedes. But, he adds, “I have learned so much” from the hard times and the mistakes. “I feel absolutely blessed to have even been introduced to [Internet marketing], he concludes.
